The origins of Mother’s Day date back as far as the times of Ancient Greeks and Romans who held festivals in honour of the Goddesses. In accordance with Christianity, Mother’s day was a celebration of the Mother Mary, and was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. It became an official holiday in 1914, when it was recognized by President Wilson through the efforts of Anna Jarvis. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated across North America on the second Sunday in May. It is a day for celebration of life, of hard work and love.

I am not be able to see my Mom today, as we live several provinces apart, but she is most definitely in my heart and thoughts. My day started with a phone call home, to hear about her weekend, what she had planned for the day and to see if she had opened the gift I mailed home. And while I will always cherish our phone calls, it is never quite the same, and I find myself a little homesick for a big hug from Mom. Because really, there is nothing better.

I am thankful to find myself surrounded by the love of Dan and his family today. We have everyone coming over a little later for a nice meal and I am sure a few rounds of board games!

So here’s to Mom’s today, and especially my Mom, for her amazing example and for helping me to become the woman I am today!
